Firefighters were called to Fairview Farms near New Bloomfield, Missouri, around 1 p.m. Monday. Fire had engulfed three buildings on the property, and destroyed the training barn, the colt barn and the arena. Employees were able to rescue some horses from the barns. The farm announced on its Facebook page Monday night the flames had claimed the lives of seven horses and three dogs.
Firefighters from at least 11 different departments responded, including the Holts Summit, New Bloomfield, Millersburg and North, Central and South Callaway fire protection districts. Crews from the Boone County, Southern Boone County and Cole County fire protection districts responded as well, along with elements of the Jefferson City and Fulton fire departments. Since few fire hydrants were available, firefighters relied on as many as 15 to 20 tankers to relay water to the scene.
