** Following is an open letter to association members from the Joint Leadership Council **
We hope this letter finds you well as our country and show horse community starts the process of reopening. We know everyone is anxious to welcome their customers and lesson students back to the barn and get back to horse shows as soon as possible.
As much as we look forward to getting back to business, we must remain diligent in following the local, state and federal mandates to ensure the safety and welfare of our horses and participants at shows and at home. We ask you to assist competition organizers by taking the lead and encourage your staff and customers to follow the guidelines in place for each particular competition.
We are proud to continue to work with members, volunteers, and our leadership to address the concerns, protocols, and procedures of re-opening our industry in the wake of COVID-19 and make updates to our resources. Based on feedback we have received from the first shows being held, we have amended the JLC Best Practices. We have defined general public and spectators, removed the mandate of appointment times and removed the requirement to wear gloves while on the rail. We understand that you are inundated by new protocols and procedures that often seem to change on a daily basis. We know it is confusing on which take precedence. The JLC Best Practices are simply guidelines to assist in operating competitions in the COVID-19 Environment. Organizers must follow all facility, local, state and federal guidelines, which take precedence over the JLC Best Practices.
We are proud that we have been able to award over $72,000 in grants to trainers, riding instructors, show secretaries and show personnel who have suffered economic hardship due to the pandemic through the JLC Emergency Relief Fund and the UPHA Dewey Henderson Benevolent Fund. We will continue to process applications until July 1, and are grateful for all the contributions made to these Funds which make these efforts possible. We will make the JLC Horsemen’s Relief Fund Grant program available again in the future if it becomes necessary.
Thank you for your continued support, it is through your efforts that we are able to safely return to competition.
Revised JLC Best Practices available here.
