The Colorado Horsecare Foodbank is a 501(c)3 corporation with a mission of keeping horses with their families during short term hard times due to illness, loss of employment, hardship, divorce or for other temporary problems. Applicants must have a written plan to get back on their feet, and recipients of aid are monitored for making successful steps in their plan. Feed, farrier and veterinary services are provided for the short term (average of 3 months) so that these horses do not have to leave their families while short term problems are served. In the event it is inevitable someone is not going to be able to keep their horses for the long term, the Foodbank assists for a long enough time period that the family is able to find an acceptable new home or situation for the horses. Additional aid is provided on a large scale, statewide basis during times of natural disaster – for example, during the Black Forest fires and the Colorado floods of 2013, over 1000 tons of hay were distributed. Distribution is monitored to ascertain the hay goes to appropriate situations
