US EQUESTRIAN ANNOUNCES NOMINEES FOR 2017 HORSES OF THE YEAR, VOTING OPEN

SADDLE SEAT ADULT RIDING CAMP WITH SMITH LILLY ANNOUNCED

AMHA REVAMPS STAR RATING PROGRAM

The American Morgan Horse Association Board of Directors recently voted to accept changes to its Star Rating program, to take effect starting with the 2018 show season. The program no longer will have four-star rated shows, there will only be one show, a Star Rated Show. These shows' criteria is similar to the previous 3 Star Show is applicable ONLY to show that are not USEF rated. Star Rated shows will have places 1-2 qualify for the Morgan Grand National; the fee to become a Star Rated show is $50; and it will follow USEF rules in terms of show dates. MORGANS NOW RECOGNIZED WITH AMERICAN RANCH HORSE

For the past 13 years, the American Ranch Horse Association (ARHA) only has allowed a limited number of breeds to show within its association. But beginning in 2018, ARHA has opened its registry to include all Western and Stock Type horses. Any western or stock type horse that will walk, trot, and lope will be permitted to show within ARHA. Grade horses also will now be accepted, but cannot be registered at shows because they will be required to submit photos as well as videos of the horse at a walk, jog, and lope to be accepted by the registration committee. New in 2018, US Equestrian will be offering an opportunity to all members to attend the free Competition and Member Summit: Facing Challenges Together, just prior to the 2018 Annual Meeting in Lexington, Kentucky. AMHA ANNOUNCES 2017 AWARD WINNERS

The American Morgan Horse Association Awards Committee has announced that the following individuals will be recognized at its Annual Convention, which will take place February 15-17, 2018, in Lexington, Kentucky. The Breeders' Hall of Fame honors breeders who have produced Morgans that have had a significant impact on the breed. This year's honorees are SARALIN FARM of Kentucky; QUEENS RIVER FARM of Rhode Island; and GRUNDEN RANCH INC. of Nebraska. US EQUESTRIAN ANNOUNCES LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AND JUNIOR EQUESTRIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD RECIPIENTS

The US Equestrian Federation has announced Joseph Dotoli as the recipient of the 2017 USEF Lifetime Achievement Award, and Connor Farley as the recipient of the 2017 Junior Equestrian of the Year Award. USEF will present Dotoli and Farley with these prestigious awards at the Pegasus Awards Dinner on Thursday, January 18, 2018. Dotoli, of Chepachet, Rhode Island, has been part of the horse industry for nearly 50 years as a professional rider, trainer, judge, and horse show manager. AHHS ANNOUNCES CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL FOR YOUTH MEDALLION SHOWMANSHIP IN HAND

The American Hackney Horse Society has announced that a championship final for the AHHS Youth Medallion Showmanship in Hand class has been added to the 2018 American Royal Horse Show. In an effort to encourage horse shows to add the AHHS Youth Medallion Showmanship in Hand class to their schedules, the AHHS Board of Directors, at the Board of Directors meeting held on December 2, 2017, voted to waive the fee for this class for 2018. NEW MORGAN SHOW IN NEBRASKA

The new Central Region Morgan Show & Youth Challenge will take place July 27-29, 2018 at the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln, Nebraska. The all-indoor equine facility is in the center of the country, and is about seven hours north of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and is easily accessible from I-80 and I-29. AHC ACCEPTING PROPOSALS FOR MARKETING INITIATIVE

The American Horse Council (AHC) has announced that it is accepting management proposals for the popular Time to Ride program. Time to Ride is an initiative of the AHC’s Marketing Alliance, formed in 2012 to connect people with horses and encourage horse-interested consumers to enjoy the benefits of horse activities. ASHA ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH US EQUESTRIAN IN COMPETITION LITE PROGRAM

The American Saddlebred Horse Association has announced the partnership between United States Equestrian Federation (US Equestrian) and ASHA to offer the new USEF Competition Lite category. Any ASHA registered competition that has not been licensed with US Equestrian within the last year may apply to become a Competition Lite event. As part of the Competition Lite program, competitors with US Equestrian memberships and horse recordings will have the option to participate in the US Equestrian Horse of the Year program, receiving half the points normally accrued at a Regular US Equestrian competition. However, participants are not required to be US Equestrian members and there are many other benefits to competit

MISSOURI HORSE SHOWS ASSOC. ANNOUNCES HORSE BOWL COMPETITION

UPDATE ON 33RD ANNUAL WISCONSIN LIMITED BREEDERS STALLION AUCTION

The 33rd Annual Wisconsin Limited Breeders’ Stallion Service Auction will be held Sunday, January 7, 2018 at the Thunder Bay Restaurant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The event begins at 11 a.m. with a buffet brunch followed by the annual meeting at 12:30 p.m. The live stallion service auction will begin at 1 p.m., featuring the nation's top producing stallions. MORGAN WORLD LOSES FRANK W. "PETE" JAEGER

He was active locally and nationally for many years, in New Jersey and North Carolina. He moved from New Jersey to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in the mid-1970s with his wife, Gael, their two daughters, two ponies, and two Morgan mares. MORGAN HORSE ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA GRANTED INTERNATIONAL RECIPROCITY

The American Morgan Horse Association Board of Directors voted unanimously at its November 2017 meeting to grant International Reciprocity to the Morgan Horse Association of Australia (MHAA), effective March 1, 2018. This agreement eliminates the need for Morgan horses foaled in Australia to be registered with AMHA and MHAA, removing the financial burden of this double registration process. Morgans being transferred into or out of Australian ownership will be processed through AMHA. The AMHA Registry Committee developed an International Reciprocity Agreement and Handbook and the final version was approved in 2010. AMHA YAA JUDGING SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS NOW ACCEPTED

The American Morgan Horse Association Young Adult Alliance, a group of professionals and amateurs working together to strengthen the Morgan breed, has announced the opening of applications for their fifth annual judging school scholarship. 2018 U.S. SADDLE SEAT WORLD CUP TEAM CHOSEN

After impressive showings at the U.S. Saddle Seat World Cup Team Trials, 12 riders were chosen to represent the United States at the 2018 Saddle Seat World Cup. Thirty-two aspiring athletes from 18 states tried out at William Woods University on Saturday. Twenty riders competed in the three-gaited section and 12 riders competed in the five-gaited. Each phase consisted of one rail ride and one pattern ride on an unfamiliar horse. After the Trials, six riders from each section were selected to the 2018 U.S. Saddle Seat World Cup Team in three-gaited and five-gaited. DETAILS ANNOUNCED ON 2018 MID-AMERICA SPRING FLING

2017 CENSUS OF AGRICULTURE BEGINS

The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service has started mailing the 2017 Census of Agriculture to America’s horse farms. Mailing in phases, all census questionnaires should be received by late December. If you do not receive a questionnaire this year, or have not received one ever, but wish to be included, you can sign up at https://www.agcounts.usda.gov/legacy0/cgi-bin/counts. This program targets mare owners or lessees who are first-time breeders during the 2018 breeding season. US EQUESTRIAN ANNOUNCES 2018 U.S. SADDLE SEAT WORLD CUP TEAM COACHES

US Equestrian has announced that Jonelle Chovanec and Hilary Wilcox have been named the 2018 U.S. Saddle Seat World Cup Team coaches for the 2018 U.S. Saddle Seat World Cup competition in July. Chovanec (St. Charles, Ill.) has been coaching riders in the saddle seat discipline for 13 years. She is the owner, trainer and head instructor of Landmark Farm Inc., where she manages a sizeable program. Chovanec rode on three international saddle seat teams and won gold in the Five-Gaited section. NEW CMHA ADMINISTRATOR ANNOUNCED

The Canadian Morgan Horse Association (CMHA) has announced that Tina Collins has been selected as the new CMHA Office Administrator beginning the first week of December. Nancy Kavanagh has held this position for 20 years and will retire as of November 30. "It has been an honour to serve the needs of the Morgan community and the members of the Canadian Morgan Horse Association," said Kavanaugh. "I have had the pleasure to work with some great people across Canada and the United States and become good friends with many of them. SADDLEBRED WORLD LOSES NANCY MCCONNELL

Nancy McConnell, a longtime member of the American Saddlebred community and beloved friend of many, passed away early this morning. She was 74 years old. Nancy took on many roles during her lengthy career in the industry, including the operation of McConnell Stables, which she ran for many years alongside her late husband, Frank, and son, Pat. More details on final arrangements will be posted as they are made available. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this difficult time.

AMHA RELEASES HIGHLIGHTS FROM FOURTH-QUARTER BOARD MEETING

Following are highlights from the American Morgan Horse Association Board of Directors Fourth Quarter Meeting, which took place November 4, 2017, in Chicago, Illinois.  The 2018 Budget was finalized and approved with a much larger expected profit margin than in previous years and provides for promising growth in the coming years ahead. Growth in registry transactions continues, and processing at the home office continues to run smoothly following the software conversion this summer. The Directors Guide was updated and will be available via the website shortly. Updated Director Nomination forms were finalized and also will be available online when the new cycle begins on April 1, 2018.

BIGGINS STABLE ANNOUNCES DATES OF ADULT RIDING CAMP

Saturday, November 11, brought a rigorous challenge for the country’s top saddle seat Equitation riders in the 2017 USEF Saddle Seat Medal Finals at the United Professional Horseman’s Association/American Royal National Championship Horse Show. Only 12 of the 21 horse-and-rider combinations in the preliminary ride-offs were called back for the final round of competition by judges Josh Greer (Ky.), Suzy Shiflet (N.C.), and John Whalen (Mass.). COMPETITORS SET FOR USEF SADDLE SEAT MEDAL FINAL

The country’s top saddle seat Equitation riders have arrived at Hale Arena for the 2017 USEF Saddle Seat Medal Final, which takes place on November 11. As part of the United Professional Horseman’s Association/American Royal National Championship Horse Show, 21 horse-and-rider combinations will go head-to-head in pursuit of the title. Open to junior members who have won a first- or second-place ribbon in a qualifying medal class, the USEF Saddle Seat Medal Final competition begins with preliminary “ride-offs” on Saturday, Nov. 11, consisting of rail work in groups and then an individual pattern test.
