ASHA YOUTH CONFERENCE UPDATES

American Saddlebred Horse Association Junior members are called on to join ASHA for the 2017 conference, “Growing Up Saddlebred!" This year’s conference will be February 17-18, 2017 at the Clarion Hotel North in Lexington, Kentucky. SHOW HORSE WORLD LOSES DEBRA HURST

The show horse world suffered a tremendous loss on Tuesday, December 20, when longtime Morgan and Saddlebred owner and exhibitor Debra Hurst, of San Diego, California, passed away. A beloved mother and friend, Debra has been involved with horses for more than 40 years, passing on her love of show horses to her daughter, Tayler Walters. Debra’s distinguished Morgan champions included horses such as Meet George Jetson GCH, Pegasus Commander Jack, RWF On Display, HVK Brass Ring, MLF Caliente, Never Surrender, No Doubt, Total Request, Dragonsmeade Courante, Boxford Drummerboy, ECP Scandalous and numerous other stars of the show ring. YOUTH ACADEMY GUIDELINES RELEASED

The American Saddlebred Horse Association has released a publication that is intended to be a source of information for those responsible for organizing horse shows; for judges and other horse show officials; and for instructors and trainers. ASHA recognizes the need for providing standardized guidelines for the academy division, promoting a level playing field, helping judges understand academy criterion, and encouraging lesson programs at more stables. The Academy program is all-inclusive, allowing beginners to advanced students a way in which to participate. AMHA ANNOUNCES 2016 AWARDEES

The American Morgan Horse Association Awards Committee has announced the following individuals will be recognized at its Annual Convention, which will take place February 22-25 in Riverside, California. Congratulations to all! The Breeders' Hall of Fame honors breeders who have produced Morgans that have had a significant impact on the breed. This year's honorees are Broadfields-Highover Morgans of Maine and Silver Creek Stables of California. Inducted into AMHA's Hall of Fame are Nancy Caisse of Massachusetts and Renee Page of Missouri. HORSE WORLD LOSES DAVID LEE HOWARD

  David Lee Howard, 72, of Shelbyville, Tennessee, passed away Saturday, December 17, at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. Visitation was held Tuesday, December 20, at the Feldhaus Funeral Home in Shelbyville. The funeral mass was on December 21 at St. William's Catholic Church. A reception in celebration of his life for his family and friends followed at the family's home. David was born in New Jersey to Helen and Julian R. Howard on October 2, 1944. The family moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where David attended Our Lady of Perpetual Health Catholic School, where he met his wife Mary Watson when they were in middle school, starting a love affair tha

ASHA UNVEILS NEW AOT AWARDS PROGRAM

The American Saddlebred Horse Association announced a new awards program aimed at Amateur Owner Trainers. The purpose of the award is to reward the achievements of AOTs competing in non-AOT classes in all divisions with their Saddlebreds. SCHEDULE SET FOR 32ND ANNUAL WISCONSIN LIMITED BREEDERS STALLION AUCTION

The 32nd Annual Wisconsin Limited Breeders Stallion Service Auction will be held Sunday, January 8, 2017 at the Thunder Bay Restaurant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The event begins at 11 a.m. with a buffet brunch followed by the annual meeting at 12:30 p.m. The live stallion service auction will begin at 1 p.m., featuring most of the country's top producing stallions. Weanlings sired by the sold stallions will compete in 2018 at the Wisconsin Futurity Horse Festival. HORSE WORLD LOSES OLLIE MAE KNIPP

Ollie Mae Knipp, 88, of Jefferson City died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2016, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia. Private graveside service and interment were conducted at Riverview Cemetery in Jefferson City. Ollie Mae was born May 31, 1928, in Springfield, the daughter of Carl W. and Elsie (Walker) Murray. She was married May 30, 1959, in Lancaster to E.J. “Gene” Knipp, who preceded her in death on June 4, 1980. She was a 1945 graduate of Willard High School in Willard. A resident of the Jefferson City area for most of her life, Ollie Mae was employed with the Missouri Attorney General’s Office and the Missouri Department of Employment Security. SHOW WORLD LOSES MARILYN CARLSON CHILDS

Marilyn Carlson Childs passed away on Dec. 16, 2016. Recipient of the cherished Audrey Gutridge Award at the Kentucky State Fair in 2008, Marilyn began her career at Eastern States Exposition in 1932 and made her final horse show ride at the Dixie Jubilee in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1992. Except for her husband, Harold Childs, no trainer handled her horses other than Rick Wallen, with whom she had her last two five-gaited horses, Cabaret Jazz and Worthy’s Not Enough. After a start as a newspaper reporter, she became associate editor of "American Horseman." In 1945, she became managing editor of "Popular Horseman," until marrying the respected trainer and judge, Harold Childs, in 1952

AMERICAN HORSE COUNCIL TO OFFER INTERNSHIPS IN 2017

In 2017, the American Horse Council (AHC) will begin offering three different internship programs available to both high school and college students. The United States Equestrian Federation has named Elizabeth “Lizzy” Traband as the 2016 Junior Equestrian of the Year. REMINDER: SUBMIT YOUR BREEDING REPORTS TO AMHA NOW

Stallion Service Reports are due to the American Morgan Horse Association by January 15 each year. But if you are finished breeding for 2016, why wait? Avoid the rush of the holidays and send them in now! Per the AMHA Registry Rules, if you have bred your stallion to a registered Morgan mare, you must file a Stallion Service Report. U.S. SADDLE SEAT YOUNG RIDERS TEAMS ATTEND FIRST TRAINING SESSIONS

In preparation for the 2017 U.S. Saddle Seat Invitational/Test Event, the U.S. Saddle Seat Young Riders Teams attended their first training sessions at Cascade Stables in New Orleans, Louisiana, and High Caliber Stables in Greensboro, North Carolina. This was the first opportunity the riders and coaches came together to work and train as teams. It also afforded riders the opportunity to prepare for competition by riding multiple horses unfamiliar to them, just as they will at the Invitational/Test Event. ASHA WELCOMES NEW DIRECTORS FOR 2017

The American Saddlebred Horse Association has announced the election of five new members to its Board of Directors, who will join the Board starting in January of 2017 at the UPHA Convention, which will host the ASHA annual meeting. Scott Hagan, Emily Lee, Joan Lurie, Evan Orr and Dr. Owen Weaver were elected to the ASHA Board of Directors for a term of three years, starting in 2017. Also re-elected was current ASHA board member David Mount. REMINDER: AMHA NOW ACCEPTING BREED PROMOTION GRANT APPLICATIONS

The American Morgan Horse Association's 2017 Breed Promotion Grant program that is offered to Morgan enthusiasts for their promotional efforts is now open for submissions. This grant, which was revised in 2016 and replaced the former Trade Show Funding that was offered to AMHA clubs, is open to any AMHA club, organized Morgan group, Morgan barn, or AMHA-affiliated organization (individuals are ineligible). At least one member of the applying party must be a current AMHA member and all horses involved must be registered Morgans. AMHA will award up to $10,000 each year and will consider requests of all sizes. Applicants may request funding for any Morgan breed promotion purpose. CMHA HOSTS ANNUAL TURKEY TROT

Submitted to AMHA by Stacey Stearns Each year, the Connecticut Morgan Horse Association (CMHA) hosts our annual Turkey Trot on the Sunday before Thanksgiving at Bluff Point State Park in Groton, Connecticut. This was the 7th Annual Turkey Trot, and although we never know quite what to expect weather-wise, we always have a great ride in spite of Mother Nature. This year was no different, as 12 riders joined us in between rain and snow showers, and heavy winds. Somehow, we lucked out with the only sun of the day happening during the ride! The ride is a benefit for the Sue Brander Sport Horse Scholarship Fund and is open to all breeds. We affiliate with New England Horse and Trail for five and 10 miles each year. H

FAR WEST REGIONAL HORSE SHOW TO RETIRE

The team from the Far West Regional Morgan Horse Show recently made the difficult decision to retire the show that had been located in Redmond, Oregon, for many years. The good news is that the Far West and Oregon Morgan Classic shows have joined forces to host the regional in Eugene, Oregon, July 13-15, 2017. The AMHA Board of Directors recently approved this new regional show, which will go by the name the Oregon Morgan Classic Featuring the Far West Region 8 Championship. The American Saddlebred Horse Association Board of Directors voting is open to all 2016 ASHA Life, Contributing, Senior, and Charter Club Affiliate members over the age of 18. AMHA/WMF STALLION SERVICE AUCTION LINEUP ANNOUNCED

In advance of the AMHA/World Morgan Futurity (WMF) Stallion Service Auction which opens online in the coming weeks, the American Morgan Horse Association has announced the lineup of 2017 Morgan stallions generously donated by their owners. This year, you'll find new prospects, returning stallions, and some world champions newly crowned at the 2016 Grand National! All proceeds from the AMHA/WMF Stallion Service Auction will benefit the World Morgan Futurity, Regional Shows, and AMHA's Show Grant and Marketing Programs. USEF VOTES TO SUPPORT OLYMPIC FORMAT CHANGES AT FEI GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The United States Equestrian Federation voted at the November 22 FEI General Assembly to support changes to the Olympic format for equestrian sport. The biggest change in format across all three Olympic disciplines involved the number of riders per team and how they are scored. In the previous format, there were four riders that participated on each team with a drop score in each round of competition. Under the newly approved format, there will be three riders per team and no drop score. The active reserve can be substituted into the competition at the beginning of any phase of competition. USEF ADDS DIAMANTE FARMS TO LIST OF ELITE TRAINING CENTER DESIGNATION LOCATIONS

The United States Equestrian Federation has announced that Diamante Farms, located in Wellington, Florida, has been accepted into the USEF Elite Training Center Designation Program. The program allows venue owners, who have hosted at least one USEF-sanctioned team, developing rider or horse training session, in one of the eight FEI disciplines, within the last year to apply for Elite Training Center status. AHC ANNOUNCES NEW STUDENT MEMBERSHIP

Starting in January 2017, the American Horse Council (AHC) will be offering a new membership option available to students only. The student membership will be available to both high school and college students, and membership will be subject to verification; only full-time enrolled students are eligible for this special student membership. “The involvement of youth in our industry is critical to its future.
