CARSON KRESSLEY TO RIDE IN 127th ROSE PARADE

For the second year in a row, pop culture personality Carson Kressley will be riding an American Saddlebred in the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day, in Pasadena, California. This year’s parade, the 127th, celebrates the theme, "Find Your Adventure." Aboard the mare Flurry, Carson will ride the 5-1/2 miles along the parade route and Colorado Blvd., to the delight of parade watchers around the world. Michele Macfarlane owns the Saddlebred. Carson has been riding Saddlebreds for more than 30 years. SADDLEBRED WORLD LOSES LANDON ROWLAND

National Horseman is deeply saddened to report that Landon Rowland, 78, passed away Monday, December 28, after a long illness. Landon was a prominent businessman and philanthropist in the Kansas City area, as well as a longtime owner and supporter of the Saddlebred breed through his family’s Ever Glades Farm. Funeral arrangements will be posted as information becomes available. National Horseman would like to extend our condolences to the Rowland and Townsend families, as well as Landon’s many friends.

MISDEE WRIGLEY MILLER AND ELISABETH GOTH NOMINATED FOR USEF EQUESTRIAN OF THE YEAR

The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) has announced its nine 2015 Equestrians of Honor, including noted Saddlebred riders, Misdee Wrigley Miller and Elisabeth Goth. Each of the nine nominees won an individual trophy for their standing in their sport, and qualified to win the USEF's Equestrian of the Year honor. Everyone is encouraged to vote for their choice to win the prestigious award. Voting will run through midnight Eastern on January 4, 2016. ASHA ANNOUNCES NEW DIRECTORS FOR 2016

The American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA) announced the election of five new members to its Board of Directors, who will join the Board starting in February, 2016 at the Super Convention, which will host the ASHA annual meeting. Candi Aversenti, Kristen Cater, and Cheryl Innis were elected to the ASHA Board of Directors for a term of three years, starting in 2016.  Also re-elected were current ASHA board members Holly Nichols and Leslie Rainbolt-Forbes.  ASHA offered its members the opportunity to vote for new directors either electronically or by the traditional paper ballot during the month of November 2015.  The ballot count was ratified by members of the ASHA Board for accurac

CAMERON KAY WINS 2015 JUNIOR EQUESTRIAN OF THE YEAR

The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) announced Cameron Kay as the 2015 Junior Equestrian of the Year. Horses always have been a part of 18-year-old Kay's life, as she has been riding and showing Morgans and Saddlebreds for 12 years. She was a member of the 2015 USEF Young Riders Saddle Seat Team that competed in South Africa, and came home with both the Three-Gaited Team and Individual Gold medals. A prime example of courage, sportsmanship, and dedication, Kay will be awarded the Ruth O'Keefe Meredith Memorial Trophy as the 2015 Junior Equestrian of the Year.

SADDLEBRED WORLD LOSES RICHARD FRANKLIN KEARNEY

Richard Franklin Kearney, 83, died Monday, December 7, 2015 at Presbyterian Senior Care, Southminster.  He was born November 7, 1932 in Clarke County, Iowa, the son of the late Gilbert Ross Kearney and Edna Bernice Williams Kearney. 
Richard served in the U.S. Army, where he received the National Defense Service Medal.  Richard began his Saddlehorse career in his home state of Iowa during his high school Years. He experienced much success with Dr. E. L. Robinson in Lee's Summit, Missouri as head trainer. Most noteworthy was his winning of the Jr. Stake in Lexington, Kentucky with Superior Odds in 1969. AMHA OFFERS 2016 BREED PROMOTION GRANT

Applications for AMHA's Breed Promotion Grant are now being accepted. The grant, which replaces the former Trade Show Funding that was offered only to AMHA clubs and is new in 2016, is now offered to any Morgan enthusiast, AMHA club, organized Morgan group, Morgan barn, or AMHA-affiliated organization for funding for any Morgan breed promotion purpose. AMHA will award up to $10,000 each year and will consider requests of all sizes. The applicant needs to make a compelling grant request and include information regarding the size of the audience or reach of the program. SADDLE SEAT WORLD CUP TEAM CHOSEN AFTER SELECTION TRIALS AT WILLIAMS WOODS UNIVERSITY

After impressive showings at the Saddle Seat World Cup Team Trials, 12 riders were chosen to represent the United States at the 2016 Saddle Seat World Cup. Thirty-two aspiring athletes, 20 in three-gaited competition and 12 in five-gaited, from 27 states tried out at William Woods University on Saturday. Each phase consisted of one rail ride and one pattern ride on unfamiliar horses. After the trials were complete six riders for each section were selected to the 2016 U.S. Saddle Seat World Cup Team in both three-gaited and five-gaited. AMHA'S 2016 STALLION SERVICE AUCTION IS LIVE

The American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) has announced that bidding on the 2016 AMHA/World Morgan Futurity Stallion Service Auction has begun. This year's auction is entirely online. All bidding will close on Monday, February 29, 2016 at 12 p.m. EST. All contracts will be sold to the highest bidder on Monday, February 29, 2016 at 12 p.m. (noon) Eastern time. 

All proceeds from the auction will benefit the World Morgan Futurity, regional shows, and AMHA's Show Grant and Marketing programs. This year's roster of stallions are both new and returning successes, including:

WILLIAM WOODS TO HOST SADDLE SEAT EQUITATION WORLD CUP TEAM SELECTION FINALS

The top saddle seat Equitation riders in the country will assemble this weekend when William Woods University hosts the United States Saddle Seat Equitation World Cup Team Selection Trials. 

The trials, which are free and open to the public, will be held Saturday, Dec. 5, in the equestrian studies UPHA indoor arena at WWU. The three-gaited trials will be held 8 a.m.-1 p.m., and the five-gaited trials will be held 1:30-6 p.m. The team to represent the United States in the 2016 Saddle Seat Equitation World Cup in July in South Africa will be announced at 6:15 p.m.

CHANGES TO AMHA'S OPEN COMPETITION PROGRAM

The 2016 Open Competition Program Guidelines, including some changes, from the American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) are now available. Several updates have been made to the program and are outlined below: AMHA is offering the opportunity for retroactive points from up to 10 years previous to those submitted in the current competition year, for a fee of $100/year, to be applied toward a Morgan Medallion Award. SADDLEBRED WORLD LOSES NANCY CRABTREE

The American Saddlebred world has lost Nancy Riester Crabtree, 74, who passed away Sunday, November 29, 2015 in Louisville. 

Nancy was the wife, mother, grandmother and matriarch of the Crabtree family, and a member of Simpsonville Baptist Church. She helped start the Shelbyville Horse Show and the Shelbyville Community Theatre. She was a member of the Garden Club and Al-Anon.

ARIZONA BRED HORSES COMPETE THIS SATURDAY AT TURF PARADISE

Arizona horses will be in the spotlight with the entire eight-race card, including four stakes, devoted to state breds Saturday at Turf Paradise.

COURTNEY BALL WINS 2015 USEF YOUTH SPORTSMAN'S AWARD

The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is pleased to announce Courtney Ball as the winner of the 2015 USEF Youth Sportsman’s Award. MARY AVERY PASSES AWAY

Mary Peyton Hubbell Avery, 92, a longtime resident of Columbia, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015, at Lenoir Woods in Columbia. Funeral services to celebrate her life will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 1, at the Missouri United Methodist Church Chapel, 204 S. BIGGINS STABLE TO OFFER ADULT RIDING CAMP

ROY C. WERNER PASSES AWAY

Roy Werner passed away on October 18, 2015 exactly a month from his 93rd birthday.  Roy and his wife Judy own Redwing Saddlebred Farm known for standing the deceased Radiant Sultan and their current stallion Designed. Roy leaves his wife Judy, son Thomas Werner (Susan), daughter Wendy, stepson Michael and four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Roy’s life is being planned.  Memorial donations can be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, American Saddlebred Museum and the American Saddlebred Horse Association, with those donations earmarked for Youth Programs.

VENDOR SPACE DEADLINE FOR SUPER CONVENTION DUE OCTOBER 31

Officials with the 2016 Super Convention announced the first deadline with the best price for vendor space is coming up October 31, 2015. The convention is being held February 9 – 14, 2016 at the Westin Waterfront, Boston, MA. If space is reserved by October 31 the cost for a 10 x 10 space (does not include electrical drop or internet access) is $300. The space does include (1) six foot table, (2) chairs and a wastebasket. All electrical, audio/visual and Internet services must be reserved directly through Westin Boston Waterfront and must be ordered at least 14 days prior to the convention. GAYLE LAMPE TO CONDUCT SADDLE SEAT RIDING CLINIC AT WILLIAM WOODS UNIVERSITY

Gayle Lampe is conducting a saddle seat riding clinic at William Woods University on December 12-18. Riders are welcome to come for as many days as they wish, however, it is recommended to stay for at least three days. Riders will ride twice on some days and three times on other days. Barn visits to saddle horse training stables in the area and a variety of lectures will be included. This clinic is mainly for adults; however, some highly motivated junior exhibitors could also be accepted.  A maximum of nine riders will be accepted at one time. ELLEN GALE GREEN PASSES AWAY

Ellen Gale Green passed away July 20th, 2015, at the age of 97 with her friends and family present in her home at Harbor Chase of Gainesville. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, to Dr. and Mrs. Press C. Hopkins, she was the oldest of four children. She graduated from Greenwood High School in Springfield, Missouri, and in 1937 attended and swam for Southwest Missouri State Teachers College (now known as Missouri State University). Ellen Gale was one of Missouri's premier swimmers, competing in the 1936 Olympic trials and in 1937 being named "Springfield's Sportsman of the Year". She married Elbert H. Green in 1939 and had seven children. She and her family raised and showed world-class American Saddlebred horses. She served

U.S. TEAM ACHIEVES GOLD MEDAL SWEEP AT 2015 SOUTH AFRICA SADDLE SEAT INVITATIONAL

The U.S. Saddle Seat Young Riders Travel Team made the trek to Africa to compete in the 2015 South Africa Saddle Seat Invitational at the Mistico Equestrian Centre, September 16-19. The 11 U.S. athletes delivered fantastic performances against nine of South Africa’s top saddle seat equitation riders. Under the guidance of coaches Kelly Kraegel (Guthrie, Okla.) and Sarah Lawson (Rockport, Ind.) and assisted by 2012 Saddle Seat Gold Medal coach Kristen Cater (Dunbarton, NH), the U.S. Team claimed the Three- and Five-Gaited Team and Individual Gold medals. JUDGE ANNOUNCED FOR 2015 OLD DOMINION CLASSIC FALL HORSE SHOW

Fresh off of winning the Five-Gaited World’s Grand Championship, Lionel Ferreira of Simpsonville, KY will travel to Virginia to judge the Old Dominion Classic Fall Horse Show.  The event will take place in the East Complex of the Virginia Horse Center on October 9th & 10th.  Qualifying classes will start at 6:00 pm on Friday evening.  Academy classes will be featured at 10:00 am on Saturday morning followed by the Championship classes after the chili lunch.  Lionel Ferreira is no stranger to the Saddlebred industry having been around horses from an early age.  After school, he went to Kentucky & worked for several trainers perfecting his skills.  He then trained in Hereford, Eng
