ASHA TRAINERS’ EQUITATION CUP GOES NATIONAL

Because of the success of the inaugural ASHA Trainers’ Equitation Cup in 2014, ASHA is pleased to announce that for 2015 various ASHA Trainers’ Equitation Cup qualifiers will be held at shows across the country.

To qualify for the grand prize drawings (see details below), each trainer must compete in at least one ASHA Trainers’ Equitation Cup qualifier. To show in the qualifier, a trainer must be nominated with a fee of at least $100. Trainers may be nominated to show in more than one qualifier. Multiple participation is encouraged! BLUEGRASS SELECT SERIES TO DEBUT AT KENTUCKY SPRING PREMIER

The Bluegrass Select Series will debut during the Thursday, April 9, 2015 6 PM session of the Kentucky Spring Premier Horse Show, held in the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Ky. This program features a series of classes held at designated Kentucky shows. These classes are designed for those horses not showing at the World’s Championship Horse Show to have a place to show against the same level horses, riders and drivers. These classes will NOT count as qualifying classes for the World’s Championship Horse Show. NEW STABLE-LEVEL AWARDS SET FOR UPHA RIBBONS OF SERVICE PARTICIPATION

The popular UPHA Ribbons Of Service program is stepping up its game to teach riders about the many opportunities for meaningful community service as generous donors have created new awards for the stables that support and encourage riders who participate. ROCK CREEK HORSE SHOW EXPANDS SCHEDULE FOR 2015

The 78th annual Rock Creek Horse Show will be held June 2 - 6 at the historic Rock Creek Riding Club in Louisville.  Robert Gardiner from Ashland, MO will judge all classes.  New classes this year include: USEF Adult Medal, Walk/Trot Pleasure-12 and under qualifier and championship and championships for the Country Pleasure-Novice Rider and Show Pleasure-Novice Rider classes.  In addition to the added classes, Rock Creek will participate in the newly formed Bluegrass Select Series, which is for beginner and mid-level horses and riders that do not compete at the World’s Championship Horse Show in Louisville.  Bluegrass Select Series qualifying classes for Amateur/Junior Exhibitor Five-Gaited, Amateur

AMERICAN SADDLEBREDS PRESENTED AT RECENT HARNESS HORSE FESTIVAL

The American Saddlebred was well represented at the recent Harness Horse Festival, sponsored by the American Dutch Harness Horse Association, held at the Kentucky Horse Park Alltech Arena on March 13-14, 2015.  The American Saddlebred Registry and American Saddlebred Horse Association booth had several visitors that were anxious to hear about the Registry’s Sport Horse Programs and the Half Saddlebred Registry.  Educational brochures about American Saddlebreds were available along with videos that were played non-stop at the booth.  The highlight for our American Saddlebreds was the breed demonstration on Friday that included the Combined Driving Champion, Varoom owned by the Briney Family’s Pratense Fa

MORGAN WORLD LOSES JANET GRAHAM BACKUS MORGAN

Janet Graham Backus Morgan passed away on Friday, March 27, 2015, at her Morgan horse farm, in Colebrook, CT, with her loving husband Daniel by her side. She was the daughter of the late Dana C. and Louise Laidlaw Backus. Janet's main love and vocation was her Morgan horses. She raised Morgans for twenty years, doing all the breeding, birthing and initial training herself. She then began showing her Morgan horses for another twenty years, riding and driving them herself. She competed in major shows all around the country, winning many championship ribbons. Janet was active in The League of Women Voters in her former home in Virginia and also in Connecticut. SADDLEBRED WORLD LOSES ALBERTA L. COX

Alberta Lee Cox, 83, passed away at her home on March 23, 2015.  Alberta was born August 7, 1931 the daughter of Joseph Leroy and Alberta W. (Smith) Cox. She graduated from Raytown High School in 1949. Alberta was a noted breeder, owner and exhibitor of American Saddlebred horses. She  belonged to the Board of Directors and Treasurer of the J.L. Cox & Son, Inc. (Pipe-line stringing contractor specialist); Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority; Democratic State Club of Missouri and has been listed in "Who’s Who in Horsedom" since 1953. Alberta also excelled playing and coaching basketball.  Her playing experience spanned 20 years as a member of the National AAU Team. She participated in National AAU tournament

SADDLEBRED NIGHT AT SPINDLETOP HALL

KENTUCKY 4-H HORSE PROGRAM ANNOUNCES SADDLE SEAT ATTIRE RULE CHANGE

The Kentucky 4-H Horse Program is excited to announce that they have changed the attire requirements for the Saddle Seat division to allow Academy attire as well as the traditional Saddle Seat suit attire. The Kentucky 4-H Horse Program hopes that this change will hone greater interest in that division by youth who may not own their horse, but are still very enthusiastic about showing their mount. The Saddle Seat division is the smallest one in the program, and they are trying to increase its size. Therefore, they are putting a call out for all the Saddle Seat trainers who have a lesson program in their barn, to encourage those youth to join the 4-H Horse Program in their counties and receive the great education that is available

2015 AMHA DIRECTOR ELECTION RESULTS

The American Morgan Horse Association announced election results at the annual members meeting on Friday February 27, 2015. In the only contested race, Vicki Bennett was elected to Region 6 director over incumbent Jonalyn Gwinup. Mari Sanderson was re-elected for Region 7, Carol Fletcher was re-elected to Region 8, and C. A. "Tony" Lee was elected to fill the remaining term for Region 4. Jeff Gove of New Hampshire, was re-elected as a Director at Large.

Applications are now being accepted to participate in the 2016 U.S. Saddle Seat World Cup Team Selection Trials. The Trials will be held at William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri, December 4-5. A riders' meeting/draw will be held the evening of Friday, December 4, and the Selection Trials will take place on Saturday, December 5, with team member announcements that evening.

ISSRA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS TO BE HELD AT KENTUCKY HORSE PARK ALLTECH ARENA

ANNUAL ASHAG AWARDS BANQUET SUCCESSFUL

Over the weekend of February 21 and 22, 2015, The American Saddlebred Horse Association of Georgia (ASHAG) gathered in Athens, Georgia, to “Celebrate Saddlebreds 2014.” ASHAG teamed with The University of Georgia (UGA) to offer its members several activities over the awards weekend. GASPARILLA CHARITY HORSE SHOW CONNECTS WITH THE COMMUNITY

The Gasparilla Charity Horse Show, which begins next week on Tuesday, March 10 has worked hard, not only to make a great show for its exhibitors, but also for the surrounding Tampa, Florida community. Last year, with Jennifer Lawrence Katko at the helm, the Tampa Charity Horse Show (the March show in Tampa alternates each year) was able to secure multiple local news spots to promote the horse show, as well as the many events it hosted to involve the local community. WISCONSIN 3-YEAR-OLD INCENTIVE NOMINATION DEADLINE EXTENDED

The deadline for nominating 2014 foals to The Wisconsin Three Year Old Incentive Program has been extended to March 15.  Foals become eligible with a one-time payment. There are no additional payments or deadlines.  The Wisconsin Three Year Old Incentive Class is held at the Wisconsin Futurity Horse Festival in September.  Eligible foals do not have to be nominated to the ASHB Futurity of Wisconsin. Foals of 2012 and 2013 may still participate and show in The Three Year Old Incentive Class if nominated by March 15 deadline.  One time only nomination fees increase as the foal ages.  In order for a Three Year Old to show in 2015 payment must be made by March 15,

GAYLE LAMPE RECEIVES HORSEPERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD

Gayle Lampe, professor emeritus of equestrian science at William Woods University, recently was awarded Horseperson of the Year by the Missouri Horse Shows Association. Lampe received the award for her promotion of equestrian activities throughout the world, and particularly through educating young people at William Woods University. The presentation was made Jan. 24 at the Peachtree Convention Center in Columbia, Missouri. The Ohio Morgan Horse Association (OMHA) is pleased to offer a two-day Western Dressage clinic with Cliff Swanson. “GOOD HANDS” FUTURE SECURED IN SADDLE SEAT INDUSTRY

The future of the “Good Hands” Equitation program has passed into saddle seat hands with Mid-America Horse Show Association assuming responsibility for the entire program from the National Horse Show, the hunter-jumper focused organization that has administered Good Hands from the early days of its Madison Square Garden show. PIN OAK TO CELEBRATE 70 YEARS

The Pin Oak Charity Horse Show is celebrating 70 years of history in 2015, with the American Saddlebred as the centerpiece of the show’s legacy. ASB MUSEUM TO HOLD THIRD ANNUAL YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULT ART CONTEST

The American Saddlebred Museum’s Young Adult Committee is once again hosting an Art Contest! The contest will be divided into two age divisions: Youth (18 & Under) and Young Adult (19-35). Depending on the number of entries received, the Youth division may be further divided by age. This year we also have a new division for Amateur Artists (36 & Over). This division will not be judged and no monetary prizes will be awarded, but allows for our talented amateurs to showcase their works in the exhibition. BRIDLESPUR ADDS NEW CLASSES TO PROMOTE VERSATILITY

The Bridlespur MHSA Kickoff Horse Show, held April 9-11, will once again be a great way to start off the show season in Missouri. JUDGES ANNOUNCED FOR 2015 WORLD'S CHAMPIONSHIP HORSE SHOW

The judges for the Kentucky State Fair World’s Championship Horse Show have been selected.

They are: Michael Craghead, Euchee Matthews, Josh Greer, Nancy Troutman, and Jay Wood. They will be judging all divisions.

The Kentucky State Fair Board has added Saturday, August 22, 2015 to the World’s Championship Horse Show.  The schedule will be held over eight days rather than seven, making the day sessions shorter and with no day session on Thursday. 

The first Saturday night will consist of the Kentucky County Fair classes, the Kentucky Rider class, and the ASR Futurity of Kentucky for Weanling and Yearlings. The Sweepstakes will still be held Sunday

KENTUCKY STATE FAIR BOARD VOTES TO EXTEND WORLD'S CHAMPIONSHIP HORSE SHOW

The Kentucky State Fair Board today voted to extend the World’s Championship Horse Show, held during the Kentucky State Fair, by an extra day. The additional day will begin in 2015.  Held in Freedom Hall, the prestigious Saddlebred show will now begin on the first Saturday of the Fair for an eight-day run, rather than the first Sunday. The finals will continue to be held on the last Saturday night. WILLIAM WOODS TO HOST GAYLE LAMPE CLINIC

Gayle Lampe is conducting a Saddle Seat riding clinic at William Woods University on March 26-29, 2015. Riders are encouraged to stay for all four days. SADDLEBRED WORLD LOSES REDD CRABTREE

It is with a heavy heart that the Board of the American Saddlebred Horse Association announces the passing of a true legend, Redd Crabtree, 79. Crabtree brought an enormous amount of integrity and fairness to everything he did, including his service to the ASHA and the United Professional Horsemen’s Association (UPHA).
 
A 1993 inductee into the World’s Championship Horse Show Hall of Fame and a 1994 member of the Tom Moore UPHA Hall of Fame, as well as the 2010 ASHA Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Crabtree was honored just last March with induction into the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame, and he was the first show horse trainer to be recognized for the award.
