SOUTHERN SADDLEBRED SUMMER SALE NOW ACCEPTING ENTRIES

Southern Saddlebred Sales will offer a Summer Online Auction in partnership with Addis Live Online Auctions on Tuesday, June 30th at 8:00pm CST. MORGAN WORLD LOSES JILL BERTRAND

Elizabeth "Jill" Bertrand, 71, of Brookfield, Massachusetts, died on May 2, 2015, at Anthony Shawnee Hospital, Shawnee, OK, after a brief illness while on a road trip with her husband Gordon.

Jill grew up in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, where she attended Friends Academy. She earned her high school diploma at St. Mary's in the Mountains, Littleton, New Hampshire, and a B.A. degree in 1965 from her beloved Bennington College.

After college, Jill had numerous jobs - she described her resume as akin to the Yellow Pages, but derived great satisfaction for many years working as an electrical draftsman designing complex printed circuit boards for Teradyne and other local companies.

IN MEMORIAM: CASH LOVELL

Cash Alton Lovell III, 67, died at his home in Winston-Salem, N.C., on May 21, 2015, after an extended battle with a rare form of dementia. Born in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, on February 26, 1948, to the late Cash Alton and Margie Hoskins Lovell Jr., he grew up moving 18 times around the country as his father trained American Saddlebred show horses. The family settled in Winston-Salem, and more than 40 years ago he took over Cash Lovell Stables from his father, becoming the third generation of horse trainers in his family. A master horseman who trained more than 40 World Champion American Saddlebreds, Cash was known as a larger-than-life character who loved feeding bubble gum to children and playing Santa Claus for them. SADDLEBRED WORLD LOSES CASH LOVELL

Cash Lovell, the patriarch of Cash Lovell Stables in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, passed away at his home on Thursday night, May 21, 2015. Cash was inducted as a UPHA Hall of Famer in 2012, shortly after his retirement in 2011. Througout his career, he trained numerous World's and National Champions.  More details will be posted as they become available. Our hearts go out to Parker, Cashlyn, and the rest of the CLS team during this troublesome time.

SHOW HORSE WORLD LOSES ROXANNE HOOD

Dorothy Roxanne Hollister Hood passed away May 14, 2015 in Hollister, California. Memorial Services were held on Wednesday, May 20, in Hollister. Roxanne was born July 1, 1951, in Phoenix, Arizona, to the late Richard Davis Hollister III and Dorothy Grace Bean Hollister. Her family later moved to Southern California. Roxanne graduated from El Modena High School in Orange, and attended Fullerton Junior College. She met Ronald Richard Hood while she was a student there and their eternal love began. They were married and sealed in the Los Angeles LDS Temple for time and all eternity and then moved to Connecticut as part of their honeymoon. WCHS QUALIFYING EXCEPTION FOR CANCELLED MADISON CLASSIC HORSE SHOW

The Madison Classic Horse Show was cancelled due to the outbreak of the EHV-1  virus which caused concern for the well-being of the horses.  Because of this situation the management of the World’s Championship Horse Show decided that any horse that was entered in the park and pleasure classes by the closing date of the Madison Classic Horse Show would count as qualifying classes for the Kentucky State Fair World’s Championship Horse Show.

OLDHAM COUNTY SADDLE CLUB OFFERS SADDLEBRED CLASSES AT JUNE SHOW

                  Oldham County Saddle Club will be offering Saddlebred classes at their June Weekend Show. The show will be held at the Shelbyville Fairgrounds in Shelbyville, Kentucky, and will begin on Saturday, June 27, with a full slate of open horse show classes starting at 10 a.m. The Saddlebred, Arab, Morgan classes will not start prior to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday evening. Sunday will feature another slate of open show classes starting at 10 a.m. Any breed is welcome and encouraged to participate in our show series. MORGAN WORLD LOSES HEIDI KUNKEL

Heidi E. Kunkel, age 54, died at home after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer, Fri. May 15, 2015. She leaves 2 sisters, Dorinda and her husband Lewis Wintman of Providence, RI, Deborah and her husband Anthony George of Webster, 1 brother Jay and his wife Naomi Kunkel of Webster. She also leaves 2 beloved nephews, Patrick and Justin Kunkel of Webster.

She was born in Webster daughter of the late John J. and Elizabeth M. (Kane) Kunkel and lived here all her life. She was previously co-owner of the Century 21, Maher Realty Co in Auburn. 

Heidi's passion was owning, showing and breeding Morgan horses. She was recently inducted into the Morgan Horse Hall of Fame in New England. She won multiple World C

SADDLEBRED WORLD LOSES BEN SEGALLA

Ben Segalla, born June 17, 1929, in Morton Grove, Illinois, to Serafino and Erimina (nee Sola) Segalla, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 2, 2015, in Crystal Lake at the age of 85.

Growing up in relative poverty, he began working at Northwestern Stables in his hometown for the wage of 50 cents a day at the age of 12, beginning as a groom. Young Ben quickly became a proficient horseman, showman, and his disposition made him an excellent trainer and coach. He worked for Charlie Houston and Doc Flannery where he gained even more experience; the pair quickly developed a large business centered around American Saddlebred horse training and riding lessons.

ASHA LAUNCHES BREED AMBASSADOR PROGRAM

The American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA) is excited to announce that the new “Breed Ambassador Program” was unanimously approved by the ASHA Board on May 11, 2015, and information and materials are now available for download for immediate use.  This news comes after a slight “gate hold” from the original announcement that was made at the beginning of the year.  The ASHA wanted to ensure that all the guidelines and materials were easy to understand and that award banners would be attainable, and now that these items are in place the program has been made official.  Any Saddlebred promotional activity done during the calendar year WILL be counted, retroactive to January 1, 20

MADISON CLASSIC HORSE SHOW CANCELED

Because of recent concerns surrounding an outbreak of the Equine Herpes Virus, the 2015 Madison Classic Horse Show has unfortunately been canceled.   "I regretfully am confirming that the Madison Classic Horse Show for 2015 is cancelled," said UPHA Chapter 3/4 Chair and Horse Show Chair Lynda Freseth in a statement on May 17. "I apologize for the conflicting posts that have been made. The decision was made to go forward with the show after endless investigation into the circumstances of the Equine Herpes Virus. It was felt that it would not impact the show. GREAT RIVER BENEFIT CANCELS 2015 SHOW

After numerous discussions and careful consideration, the Great River Benefit show committee has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2015 show due to the recent EHV-1 outbreak. The safety and well-being of the horses and exhibitors must come first, and the show does not want to contribute to the possible spread of this deadly virus. REEDANNLAND RELEASES STATEMENT ABOUT EHV-1 OUTBREAK

On Tuesday, May 12, 2015, Reedannland Farm released a statement about the current situation at their farm involving the EHV-1 virus outbreak that left four of their champion horses dead and several others infected. Among the deceased are Appheirently Royal, Reedann’s Tinderbox, Reedann’s Can’t Top This Man, and Reedann’s Designheir, all of whom earned blue ribbons at Des Moines Springfest. MORGAN WORLD LOSES JOANN CELECKI

          Beloved member of the Morgan industry, JoAnn H. Celecki, 84, a former 33-year resident of Ledyard, New York, passed away on April 26, surrounded by family and friends at St. Ann’s Home in Rochester, New York.             JoAnn is survived by her husband of 60 years, Al Celecki; her children, Diane (George) Garrow, Kathy (David) Waters, Mark (Kim) Celecki, and Dave (Colette) Celecki and eight grandchildren.              She was a graduate of Ulster High School and Mansfield State Teachers College. ASHA/AMHA TRAINERS’ EQUITATION CUP FUNDRAISER UPDATE

The American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA) and American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) are pleased to report that the first ever joint ASHA/AMHA Trainers’ Equitation Cup Fundraiser held in Springfield, MA at the UPHA Chapter 14 Spring Premier was a huge success! 19 riders vied for the prestigious loving cup trophy, and the crowd couldn’t have been more enthusiastic. Nikki Rae Woodworth was crowned the champion, and Devon Garone was the Reserve Champion. Both associations are very appreciative of Jill Sacccocia who helped account for the funds that were raised. THE GOOD HANDS FINALS: ARE YOUR RIDERS QUALIFIED?

            Riders qualify for The Good Hands Finals (held in October) by winning first or second in one of many qualifying classes held throughout the season at local shows across the county. GAYLE LAMPE ANNOUNCES RIDING CLINIC AT WILLIAM WOODS

Gayle Lampe is conducting one saddle seat riding clinic at William Woods University on July 2-5. Riders will ride twice on two days and three times on two days. Barn visits to saddle horse training stables in the area and a variety of lectures will be included.  A maximum of six riders will be accepted at one time. SADDLEBRED WORLD LOSES JOHN LENORE

John Paul Lenore, 86, of El Cajon, California, joined our Heavenly Father on Sunday, April 19, 2015. John was born in Cleveland, Ohio to parents James Pettinato and Betty De Chiazza on August 8, 1928. Sadly, James passed away when John was only five. His mother, Betty, later married John Valentino Lenore and the family of eight made their home in Wheeling, West Virginia. As a young man, John saw an ad in the local newspaper about Manlius Military Academy outside of Syracuse, New York and decided to write a letter requesting a scholarship for football. Luckily, the school granted the scholarship because once John joined the team they went on to become undefeated for two years, all the while playing against college freshmen and college JV!

INDIANA FUTURITY AND ALL AMERICAN CUP NOMINATION DEADLINE FAST APPROACHING

PLEASE be reminded that the 2015 Indiana Futurity Nominations are due by May 1st with a grace period to May 10th without a late fee of $25.00 per horse. May 11th to May 31st entries will be accessed a late fee.  After May 31st NO nominations will be accepted. ROANOKE VALLEY HORSE SHOW CANCELLED

Horse show officials have announced that this year's Roanoke Valley Horse Show, which was set for June 15-20, will not be held due to a lack of funds. The show had run for 43 consecutive years, making it the longest-running event in Roanoke Valley. Roanoke Valley Horsemen's Association president Donnis Honeywell estimated that the show costs roughly half a million dollars to operate and cited a decline in entries and sponsorship as a reason for the show's cancellation.

APPLICATIONS NOW ACCEPTED FOR USEF HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP

Applications are now being accepted for a new scholarship available for current high school seniors who will be continuing their equestrian career during college. The USEF High School Scholarship will provide a $1,000 grant to one graduating high school senior who will be pursing equestrian either through an equestrian related degree or on an intercollegiate equestrian team. Applicants must be active members of USEF and submit an essay to the USEF office by July 1 that answers the following questions:

BIGGINS STABLE OFFERS YOUTH RIDING CAMP

Biggins Stable, located in Simpsonville, Kentucky, will be hosting its annual summer riding camp. The camp is designed for youth,18 years of age and under. SADDLEBRED FRIENDS OF SPINDLETOP CAMPAIGN TO PRESERVE HISTORY

The “Saddlebred Friends of Spindletop” campaign officially kicked off Saturday, April 18, 2015, at Spindletop Hall, the former home of and farm of Pansy Yount renowned Saddlebred owner and breeder. The evening event was attended by many Saddlebred enthusiasts to recognize the historical relationship between the Saddlebred horse breed and Spindletop Farm founder Pansy Yount who moved her Saddlebred operation from Beaumont, Texas, to the Bluegrass in 1937. AMHA is pleased to announce it has partnered with the United Professional Horsemen's Association (UPHA) to offer the Open Gate Learning Center at the 2015 Morgan Grand National. The Open Gate Learning Center is an on-site study and learning center for young equestrians who are competing at the Grand National & World Championship Morgan Horse Show®, which will take place in Oklahoma City, October 10-17.
 
The purpose of the Learning Center is to provide academic support to young riders, grades 5-12, who are away from their local schools. The center will be available to students from October 10-16. AMHA AND GRAND NATIONAL TO RECOGNIZE RIBBONS OF SERVICE PARTICIPANTS

Any youth who are participating in the UPHA Ribbons of Service program are invited to join AMHA Executive Director, Julie Broadway, on Friday, October 16, 2015, at the Morgan Grand National for a recognition processional prior to the evening performance. This will take place at the Grand National & World Championship Morgan Horse Show® in Oklahoma City, October 10-17.

AMHA JOINS ASHA FOR TRAINERS’ EQUITATION CUP

The American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA) is delighted to welcome the American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) as a partner in the nationwide Trainers’ Equitation Cup classes! ASHA and AMHA greatly appreciate the generosity of title sponsors, Becker Bros., Kaye Bowles-Durnell, Dragonsmeade Farm/The Fu Family, and Saddle Horse Report/Horse World. KENTUCKY STATE FAIR ANNOUNCES NEW POLICIES FOR WORLD'S CHAMPIONSHIP

The number of people with a horse in the make-up ring before an under saddle class will be limited to 
three (3),for a harness class four (4).  This is to ensure the safety of everyone involved.  All others 
involved with a horse should stay behind the concrete barriers, including personal photographers..  Individuals stabled in Barns A-O facing West and those stables in the North Wing facing the North aisle 
are asked to not dismantle their stall decorations until the conclusion of the show on Saturday night.

MORGAN WORLD LOSES SPICEOLIFE PRESENT TENSE GCH

            The Morgan community experienced a tremendous loss on April 11, 2015, when the great champion SpiceOLife Present Tense GCH passed away. The handsome chestnut stallion was foaled in 2002, by Arboria Noble Victor and out of SpiceOLife Allura B, a Shaker’s Alimon mare. Breeders Donald and Mary Lynn Geisler sold him to David Walker in 2004, and the horse remained in training with Diane Conrady for his entire life. SADDLEBRED WORLD LOSES CH CALLAWAY’S CRITERION

                  CH Callaway’s Criterion was born in 1988 at Callaway Hills Stables in Jefferson City, Missouri. The grand gelding was sired by CH Will Shriver and out of a CH Yorktown mare, Callaway’s First Lady. In 1991, Kenneth Smith purchased him, and the horse made his debut at Oklahoma Centennial, winning the UPHA Five-Gaited Classic with Michael Benn. In 1992 Oakwood Farms purchased him, and he stayed in their ownership until 1997. In those years he won a number of classes, including the 1994 Lexington Junior League Five-Gaited Gelding class and Open Championship, the 1994 American Royal Five-Gaited Gelding class, and was Reserve Grand Champion with Tom Moore. The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is now accepting applications for 2016 U.S. Saddle Seat World Cup Team Coaches. Interested parties should complete an application and submit their resume no later than September 1, 2015.

DENVER QUEEN CITY ANNOUNCES CHANGES FOR 2015 SHOW

The Denver Queen City Horse Show (DQCHS) is making some exciting changes to the horse show in 2015. The prestigious Colorado Saddlebred State Championships and the Centennial State Regional Peruvian Championships will continue to be held at the Denver Queen City Horse Show. Judging Saddlebred, Academy and Open classes this year is Mary Jo Schmidt from Tampa, Florida. Peruvian Horses will be judged by the honorable Amador Carrera. The horse show is held at the National Western Events Center, 1515 East 47th Avenue, Denver, Colorado. This grand facility features a large show ring, warm up arena and stalling all under one roof. MADISON CLASSIC ADDS CLASSES

Ringside tables are still available for the 2015 Madison Classic, held May 21-24 in the brand new New Holland Pavilions at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin. The reserved seating includes space for six people and hospitality for this exclusive area. The tables are $300 for the week of the show. CONNECTICUT MORGAN ADDS BREEDS & CLASSES

The Connecticut Morgan Horse Show, to be held June 3-6, 2015, has opened its doors to Saddlebred, Hackney and Friesian competitors. In addition to the full lineup of Morgan classes that have always been a staple of the show, they will now include classes for these other breeds as well as some classes open to all breeds. U.S. SADDLE SEAT INVITATIONAL TEAMS START TRAINING

In preparation for the 2015 U.S. Saddle Seat Invitational and the 2015 South African Saddle Seat Invitational, the U.S. Saddle Seat Young Riders Teams attended their first training sessions at Cascade Stables in New Orleans, Louisiana.  These training sessions were the first times the riders and coaches could all come together to work and train as a team.  It also afforded riders the opportunity to prepare for Invitational competition by riding multiple horses unfamiliar to them, just as they will at the Invitationals.

FASH SPRING ANNOUNCES JUDGE CHANGE

Due to circumstances beyond its control, FASH Spring Horse Show announces the following changes to this year’s judging panel. Randall Cates will not be able to officiate. Barbe Smith of New Orleans, Louisiana, will now join Michael Richardson of Flemington, New Jersey, and Matthew Roberts of Cave Creek, Arizona. The MOS judging system will be utilized for the Saddlebred, Saddle Seat Equitation, Hackney and Harness Pony and Exhibition divisions. Matthew Roberts will judge the Morgan division. The dates of the show are May 7-10, 2015, at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul, Minnesota. The show is USEF approved for Saddlebreds, Morgans and Hackney Ponies. UCONN OFFERS SPRING HORSE AUCTION

The University of Connecticut College and Agriculture, Health, and Natural Resources in Storrs, Connecticut, is offering its annual Spring Horse Auction on Saturday, April 25. The Sale Preview time starts at 11 a.m. with the horse auction beginning at 1 p.m. A tack and equipment tag sale will be held all day beginning at 9 a.m.

ASHA MEMBERSHIP SEES 35% MEMBERSHIP INCREASE OVER 2014
