SADDLEBRED WORLD LOSES JAMES W. ORR

James William “Jim” Orr, Jr., 74, passed away on August 29, 2015.   A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2015, from 5-8pm, at Woods Chapel United Methodist Church, 4725 NE Lakewood Way, Lee's Summit, MO 64064. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 4, at 10:00am at the church. A private burial service will be held at a later date in Moberly, MO.   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Woods Chapel United Methodist Church in his honor.   Jim was born on August 27, 1941, in Moberly, MO, to James William “Dub” Orr, Sr. and Thelma Lee (Moore) Orr. DEADLINE EXTENDED TO SEPTEMBER 15 FOR 2016 U.S. SADDLE SEAT WORLD CUP TEAM COACH APPLICATIONS

The deadline for 2016 U.S. Saddle Seat World Cup Team Coach applications has been extended to Tuesday, September 15.

The application and job description can be found on usef.org.

The USEF reserves the right to amend the job description. Any additional information will be made available on www.usasaddleseatworldcup.org.

DECLARATION OF INTENT TO SHOW FOR 2015 ASR FUTURITY SHOW DUE AUGUST 22

The deadline to submit a Declaration of Intent to Show for nominated horses entered to show in the 2015 ASR Futurity classes at the World’s Championship Horse Show is 2:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, August 22, 2015. Please be advised – Failure to declare and pay the starting fee by the above deadline will result in an ADDED $500 penalty per entry, per class. The added penalty is in addition to the declaration starting fees. In order to avoid unnecessary splitting of classes, please be sure to scratch horses that will not be showing in a futurity class with the Kentucky State Fair Horse Show Office. ASHA NAMES 2015 YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

The American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA) has announced the names of their 2015 ASHA Youth Scholarship recipients. The individuals receiving scholarships are Allison Cloud of Louisville, Ky. and Melissa Heres of Aragon, Ga. Allison Cloud has been involved with the American Saddlebred since age 7 when she began riding lessons with Biggins Stables in Simpsonville, Kentucky. She has been very active with the youth club, Biggins Bridle Bunch holding positions of President, Photographer and Yearbook Designer. During her term as President, the club earned awards every year including Youth Club of the Year a total of four times. KENTUCKY STATE FAIR BOARD APPOINTS NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF EXPOSITIONS

Steve Kelly of Owen County has been named Executive Director of Expositions for the Kentucky State Fair Board, effective September 16. Kelly will oversee the National Farm Machinery Show, the Kentucky State Fair and the North American International Livestock Exposition. Kelly has served in the Kentucky Department of Agriculture since 2008 as Executive Director of Budget and Personnel and most recently as Deputy Commissioner. Prior to KDA, Kelly worked in the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for 19 years. MHSA JOINS BOONE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO PROMOTE MISSOURI SADDLE HORSE INDUSTRY

TOLLEY GRAVES TO RETIRE AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE AMERICAN SADDLEBRED MUSEUM

The American Saddlebred Museum announced today that its longtime Executive Director, Tolley Graves, will retire at the end of this year after more than 16 years of service. Throughout her tenure, Graves led the Museum through multiple campaigns resulting in several exhibit additions and updates, an extensive building expansion and significant endowment growth. 2016 SUPER CONVENTION DETAILS ANNOUNCED

Things are really started to gear up for the 2016 Super Convention, which will be held February 9-13, 2016, in Boston, Massachusetts, at the Westin Waterfront Hotel. 

This convention is sponsored by the American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA), American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA), American Hackney Horse Society (AHHS), and the United Professional Horsemen's Association (UPHA). USEF YOUTH SPORTSMAN'S AWARD APPLICATIONS DUE SEPTEMBER 1

Applications for the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Youth Sportsman's Award are being accepted through September 1, 2015. The award recognizes young equestrians who exhibit exceptional leadership potential, serve as positive role models for their peers, demonstrate an ongoing commitment and dedication to the promotion of equestrian sport, are involved in their community, and exemplify positive sportsmanship principles.

USEF OFFERS SADDLE SEAT EQUITATION JUDGES' WEBINAR

On November 3, USEF will hold an Online/Live Session webinar, open to licensed Saddle Seat Equitation judges, applicants, and those interested in becoming licensed. This webinar will count as clinic credit to maintain or obtain the Saddle Seat Equitation Judge license. 

To access this presentation you must have Internet connection using a computer plus a separate phone connection (or computer speakers/mic) for interaction. UPHA CLASSICS JACKPOT SALE TO UNVEIL NEW FORMAT

ADULT FINALS ADDED TO GOOD HANDS PROGRAM

After multiple requests for an adult version of The Good Hands Finals, the Mid-America Horse Show Association board unanimously approved creation of The Good Hands Adult Finals to be held in addition to the established Good Hands Finals for junior riders. Both will be held at this year’s Mid-America Mane Event Show, October 22-25, at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield. SADDLEBRED WORLD LOSES ADA BURNS CRAMPTON

            We are saddened to report the passing of Ada Burns Crampton. Ada was a well-known figure on the Illinois and Wisconsin horse show circuits over a period of four decades. Ada and her daughter Janet began their love for the American Saddlebred at Bob Levy's Harmswood Stables in Morton Grove, Illinois.             It was at Harmswood that they became acquainted with trainer Richard Obenauf. Both mother and daughter rode under Dick's direction for many years. ASHA/UPHA OPEN GATE LEARNING CENTER TO BE OFFERED AT KENTUCKY STATE FAIR

The ASHA/UPHA Open Gate Learning Center will be offered at the 2015 Kentucky State Fair. Applications must be received by August 10th, 2015.

MID-AMERICA MANE EVENT JUDGES ANNOUNCED

BLUE RIDGE TO PRESENT TWO $500 GROOMS' AWARDS DURING SHOW

The Blue Ridge Horse Show has announced that two $500 awards will go to the grooms of the winning horses in classes 169, Junior Exhibitor Roadster Pony Championship, and 180, ASB Amateur Three-Gaited Park Championship. These grooms’ awards will be sponsored by Dr. John Cummins and Dr. Jennifer Stowe.   The groom will also be mentioned in all communications of the victory and will appear in the winning photo of its press releases.   Liz Holmes, manager of the Blue Ridge Horse Show, says that “We recognize that grooms are often the unsung heroes of the equestrian sport and deserve to be honored for their hard work, dedication and commitment to their riders, and especially the horses they care for."

AMERICAN ROAD HORSE AND PONY ASSOCIATION OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS

The American Road Horse And Pony Association is once again pleased to announce that they will be offering two $1000 college scholarships.  These scholarships are made possible by an incentive program sponsored by the United States Equestrian Federation.

Virginia "Jenny" Pleasants Kokenes, 70, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at Levine & Dickson Hospice House at Southminster. She was born February 9, 1945, in Clearwater Beach, FL, daughter of the late Graydon Oliver Pleasants and Virginia Shaffner Pleasants. U.S. CLAIMS GOLD AT USEF YOUNG RIDERS INVITATIONAL

The 2015 U.S. Saddle Seat Invitational concluded on Saturday, June 27 at Cascade Stables, Inc. in New Orleans, La., with the United States repeating their 2013 performance by sweeping the top podium positions in the competition. UPHA MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT TO KICK OFF LEXINGTON JUNIOR LEAGUE

The annual UPHA Memorial Golf Tournament will kick off the week long festivities at the show in Lexington, Kentucky. 
 
The tournament, which benefits the UPHA Benevolant Fund, will be held at the Picadome Golf Course (Campbell House) Sunday, July 5th.
 
A putting contest and registration will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by a luncheon at 11:00. The shotgun-start tournament starts at noon.

FAR WEST REGIONAL HORSES TEST POSITIVE FOR EIV

The remainder of the 2015 Far West Regional Morgan Championship Horse Show was cancelled due to illness late last week. Samples from three of the affected horses were tested at the Oregon State University Veterinary Diagnostic Lab on Monday, June 22 and were confirmed to be positive for Equine Influenza A Virus. The samples were negative for Equine Herpes Virus 1 & 4 and for Equine Viral Arteritis. The remainder of the samples will be tested via Merck's Equine Respiratory Pathogen Surveillance Program at UC Davis Veterinary Diagnostic Lab on Tuesday, but we expect the results will confirm OSU's diagnosis.

UPHA EXCEPTIONAL CHALLENGE CUP PROGRAM CONTINUES TO THRIVE

Across the country on May 30, parents watched anxiously as their children entered competition arenas aboard horses and ponies. Whether the goal for the day was to pick up the correct diagonal on the first attempt, to have two perfect canter departures, or to go clean in a jumper round, every parent felt the same hopes and fears. ASHA/UPHA AMATEUR OWNER/TRAINER REFERENCE DIRECTORY

ASHA and UPHA have joined forces to produce an Amateur Owner/Trainer (AOT) Reference Directory. The Reference Directory is a list of 1-3 UPHA members in each chapter who are willing to help an Amateur Owner/Trainer in their area. To volunteer to be on the list is free but the advice does not need to be, charges for services rendered is up to each individual on the list. The support a professional would give an AOT could range from a training tip, to helping to look for a horse to purchase, aiding in selling a horse, giving a lesson or two, or even allowing AOTs to stable at the end of their aisle at horse shows. ASHA/AMHA TRAINERS’ EQUITATION UPDATE FROM ASHA PRESIDENT BOB FUNKHOUSER

I am pleased to report that the ASHA/AMHA Trainers’ Equitation Cup continues to gain momentum and be a major source of FUN at the horse shows that have already held the event. This year, UPHA Chapter 14, UPHA Chapter 5, Rock Creek, and Midwest have all had extremely successful Trainers’ Equitation Cups with approximately 20 riders in each of the four classes. It has been so much fun watching the pre-show hype that went into those three classes and then the classes living up to the hype. It has also been refreshing to have so many people excited about being at the horse shows and participating, whether as a rider, coach, donor, or spectator. HORSE WORLD LOSES HARRY SEBRING

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Harry Sebring. Harry lost his battle with cancer on Friday evening, June, 19, surrounded by his family. He was the patriarch of Sebring Stables and was a professional trainer and judge of Morgan horses for over 20 years. He was also recently inducted into the AMHA's Hall of Fame. More importantly, he was a beloved member of the horse community and will be missed by many. Our hearts go out to his family during this difficult time. K.K. COMMANDER IN CHIEF PASSES AWAY

            It is with enormous amounts of sadness that Granite Hill Stable (the Jerry Solien family/Larry Gardinier) announces that the grand old campaigner K.K. Commander In Chief ("Kermit") crossed the Rainbow Bridge on June 9. He was 29 years old. Kermit was by Mountjoy's Anderson Chief, out of Commander's Blue Yonder and sported the rare Raven Wing breeding lineage. He joins other Granite Hill champions such as Hello Australia, Gunsmith, CH Cameo's Sparkling Sensation, Duke Of Troy and many others.             K.K. SADDLEBRED FRIENDS OF SPINDLETOP UPDATE

The Saddlebred Friends of Spindletop campaign, which kicked off in April at Spindletop Hall, has attained over 75% of its $100,000 goal according to Misdee Wrigley Miller, Co-Chair of the Saddlebred Friends initiative. The ASHA is excited to announce that the new “Breed Ambassador Program” was unanimously approved by the ASHA Board on May 11, and information and materials are now available for download for immediate use. Any Saddlebred promotional activity done during the calendar year WILL be counted, retroactive to January 1, 2015. MID-AMERICA SIGNATURE ANNOUNCES DATE, JUDGES

The Mid-America Signature Show’s July 31-August 2 dates put it two weeks after SummerFun and eight days before the Illinois State Fair show this year.             An old fashion outdoor show, Signature is held at Ledges Sporting Horses in Roscoe, Illinois, on the Illinois/Wisconsin state line.
