JUDGING CHANGE AT UPHA CHAPTER 5

           Due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict, Melinda Moore will now join Tré Lee and Tim Roesink on the three-judge panel at the UPHA Chapter 5 Horse Show. Ms. Moore will judge the Saddlebred, Hackney and Equitation divisions. Tré Lee will judge the Saddlebred division, while Tim Roesink will judge Saddlebreds and Morgans.
           The 2013 Chapter Honor Show of the Year will pursue that title once again on May 7-10 at the Hale Arena, part of the American Royal Complex. ADDED PRIZE MONEY IN THE JD MASSEY CLASSIC JACKPOT STAKES

            The JD Massey Classic Board of Directors is pleased to announce added money and prizes in the Three-Gaited and Five-Gaited Jackpot Stakes. This year’s event will feature the “Jackpot” format for the first time, with qualification not required to show in these two signature Stake classes.

ROBERTSON EQUINE SPRING SALE COMING UP

            The Robertson Equine Spring Sale will be held Monday and Tuesday, April 7-8. It will feature the complete dispersal of Michael and Jonna Curry's horses on Monday, followed by select Curry horses selling Tuesday, including Callaway's Guy Park.
            At the end of the dispersal, the sale will move into regular consignments, a wonderful group of Saddlebreds and Hackney ponies, plus a World's Champion road horse. The tack sale will be Tuesday at 7:30 a.m.

SADDLEBRED RESCUE ISSUES CHALLENGE

            Saddlebred Rescue appreciates your support over the years. The money raised has been a huge help in the efforts to save, rehab and place more horses. It’s hard to believe that the show season has already begun for 2014, and the officers and board members of SBR want to make sure that every show and/or promoted SBR booth that has named the Rescue as one of its charities this year has the resources needed to promote the horses.

USEF ANNOUNCES JUDGES FOR 2014 SADDLE SEAT WORLD CUP

            The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is pleased to announce the officials selected to judge the 2014 Saddle Seat World Cup competition. Medal-winning countries from the 2012 Saddle Seat World Cup competition each put forward a judge to officiate this prestigious competition in 2014. The judges are David Brent from Canada, Hugo Visser from South Africa and Michael Craghead from the United States.

ALBANY LAW SCHOOL TO LAUNCH NEW CONCENTRATION IN EQUINE, RACING AND GAMING LAW

            In response to a growing demand for qualified attorneys to work in the nation’s $225-billion equine, racing and gaming industries, and with several casinos in development stage across New York state, Albany Law School announced that it will offer a concentration in equine, racing and gaming law—the only one of its kind in the nation—starting September 2014 for the incoming class of 2017.

AMERICAN SADDLEBRED WORLD LOSES MARK OF DESIGN

            On Saturday, Feb. 22, Mark Of Design died of complications of castration. He was owned, trained and shown by Lisa Worrell Whittle of Imagemaker Farm, Hillsville, Virgina, in the VA/NC show circuit. Mark had notable wins in the Fine Harness, Park and Five-Gaited divisions at such shows as Roanoke, Asheville, Blowing Rock and Raleigh. He sired the 2013Junior and Open Fine Harness Champion at Roanoke, My Lovely Lady.

AMERICAN SADDLEBRED WORLD LOSES LEWIS MEADOWS

            Lewis Samuel Meadows was born on November 21, 1959 in Richwood, West Virginia, and passed away peacefully on March 15. He was raised in Cottle, West Virginia. Lewis and his wife, Donna, owned and operated El-Dorado Farm in Mount Nebo for the past 17 years. Lewis dedicated his life to his family and American Saddlebred horses. He was a professional horse trainer with many state, local and World’s Champion titles earned by horses he has bred or trained.
            Lewis was the son of the late Sam and Ona (King) Meadows. He is survived by his wife, Donna Meadows, stepson Taylor Tully and wife Amanda of Mount Nebo, stepdaughter Jordan

USEF ANNOUNCES NEW ROADSTER DIVISION REQUIREMENTS

         The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) would like to advise all members that participate in the Roadster Division to be aware of a rule change (RD101) that takes effect April 1 and eliminates the registration requirement. On April 1st, horses showing in the Roadster division will no longer have to submit a copy of their registration papers to the competition secretary. However, all horses competing in USEF licensed competitions must be properly identified. Therefore, if your Roadster Horse is registered, you will continue to write the registration number on the entry blank. If your horse is not registered, it will have to have a USEF Horse ID number. TIME TO RIDE “100 DAY HORSE CHALLENGE” TO LAUNCH JUNE 1

           Time to Ride, an initiative of the American Horse Council, today announced an aggressive grassroots effort designed to engage 100,000 new people with horses in a 100-day period.
            The 100 Day Horse Challenge is a nationwide campaign intended to expose at least 100,000 new people to horses while providing $100,000 in cash and prizes to participating stables, organizations and businesses. UNITED BREEDERS COMMITTEE CALL TO ACTION

          The United Breeders Committee (UBC) has been formed to try to find viable solutions to the problem of the decline in American Saddlebred, Hackney, and Morgan foal registrations. In an effort to stimulate breeding, the UBC is working with stallion owners, trainers and veterinarians to help reduce the cost of producing a marketable product. The program has three facets: the trainer list, the leasable mare list and the stallion list.

THE SOUTHEASTERN HACKNEY ASSOCIATION INVITES YOU TO SHOW YOUR PONY

           At the annual meeting of the SEHA, the board of directors and members voted to implement an incentive program to give cash awards to members showing their ponies at selected shows in the region.
            Members in good standing who have nominated their ponies can win prize money over and above the money paid by the horse shows. CONSIGNMENTS NOW BEING ACCEPTED FOR 2014 EQUINE ART AUCTION

          The American Saddlebred Museum is accepting consignments to be considered for inclusion in the 2014 Equine Art, Antique and Rare Book Auction. The auction will be held on Saturday, July 12, at the Museum’s Showplace for Saddlebreds in conjunction with the Lexington Junior League Horse Show. CH FACE CARD PASSES AWAY

     We are sad to announce the passing of CH Face Card at 31 years old. The mare was shown to multiple World’s and National titles in her long show career by trainer, Rob Byers, and devoted owner, Sally Groub Gayeski. She was laid to rest next to her dam, A New Face (BHF), and her sire, WC Boola Boola, on Copper Coin Farm where she was born.

AMERICAN SADDLEBRED WORLD LOSES CH HARLEM TOWN

            CH Harlem Town was humanely put to rest on February 25 after months of declining health at Fred Sarver's Cornerstone Farm in Carlisle, Kentucky.
            The result of the breeding of the multi-World’s Champion Five-Gaited stallion, Harlem Globetrotter and multi-World’s Champion Three-Gaited mare, CH Town Dance, Harlem Town was royally bred. USEF ANNOUNCES ROADSTER PONY AND HACKNEY ROADSTER PONY COMPETITIONS SELECTED FOR HEEL MEASUREMENTS

          The USEF Hackney Committee has selected the six competitions at which heel measurements will be required of Roadster Pony and Hackney Roadster Pony Championship classes as defined by USEF Hackney and Roadster Division rules. BID NOW ON THE AMHA/WMF STALLION SERVICE AUCTION

Time is running out to bid on the AMHA/WMF Stallion Service Auction. This year's roster of stallions includes new stallions, returning stallions, champions in all divisions, plus some World Champions crowned at the 2013 Grand National.

AMHA uses its portion of the proceeds for marketing and promotion, which helps everyone who owns Morgan horses as well as its Regional Shows. The World Morgan Futurity (WMF) uses their portion to give money back to Morgan breeders at this year's Grand National. Not only is this money given back to the Futurity horses that win their classes in Oklahoma, but their sires win money, their dams win money, and even the trainers get a bit of the jackpot.

FIRST TRAINING SESSION FOR 2014 SADDLE SEAT WORLD CUP TEAM A SUCCESS

In preparation for the 2014 Saddle Seat World Cup on July 22-26 in the United States, the U.S. Saddle Seat Team attended its first training session February 7-9 at Cascade Stables in New Orleans, Louisiana. This training session was the first time the riders and coaches could all come together to work and train as a team. It also afforded riders the opportunity to prepare for World Cup competition by riding multiple horses unfamiliar to them, just as they will at the World Cup.

Golden Isles Riding Academy Kicks Off Show Season With Charity Event

The 2nd Annual Golden Isles Riding Academy Charity Horse Show will be held March 1, 2014, 9am EST in Brunswick, Ga. NANCY BECKER AND GARY GARONE NAMED 2014 US SADDLE SEAT WORLD CUP TEAM COACHES

The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is pleased announce that Nancy Becker and Gary Garone have been named coaches of the 2014 U.S. Saddle Seat World Cup Team. 2014 ASHA YOUTH CONFERENCE EVENTS

The 2014 ASHA Youth Conference is an event you do not want to miss! The ASHA Annual Convention and Youth Conference, held February 13-15, 2015 (the Youth Conference begins on February 14) is in its first year at its new location, the Hilton Lexington/Downtown.

AMHA Convention Hotel Reservation Deadline Extended

The deadline for making hotel reservations for the AMHA Convention in Raleigh, North Carolina, has been extended to Friday, January 31. Now is your chance! Don't be left out, because rooms are filling up fast!

UPHA Ribbons Of Service Riders Raise $98,810 And Complete Over 1,200 Community Service Hours

“We believe this program,” said United Professional Horsemen’s Association President Gary Garone at the organization’s recent annual convention, “personifies the value of a youngster’s participation with show horses. We strive to develop great riders who enjoy a lifelong sport, but, as importantly, excellent citizens who make our communities a better place.”

Saddle Seat Riding Clinic At William Woods University

Gayle Lampe is conducting a saddle seat riding clinic at William Woods University on March 21-25, 2014. Riders will ride twice on some days and three times on other days. Barn visits to saddle horse training stables in the area and a variety of lectures will be included. This clinic is mainly for adults; however, some highly motivated junior exhibitors could also be accepted.  A maximum of ten riders will be accepted at one time.

SADDLEBRED WORLD LOSES DONNA MOORE

Legendary horsewoman Donna Moore passed away at age 82 on Saturday, January 18 surrounded by loved ones. She was born January 28, 1931 to the late Ray and Iva Hobbs in Kansas City, Missouri. She was the former wife of late horseman Thomas Mitchell Moore, and her two daughters, Melissa Moore of Versailles, Kentucky, and Melinda Moore of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, are World’s Champion horse trainers.

Often referred to as the “queen” of the Saddlebred industry, Donna owned and operated Donna Moore Stables and established herself as a respected trainer, judge and breeder. KATHY SHORTEN PASSES AWAY

Morgan horse trainer, Kathleen M. Shorten, 64, of Bellvue, Colorado, passed away on December 24, 2013.

Kathy was born and raised in Warwick, New York, on February 15, 1949 to Thomas and Theresa Cooney. Kathy had been riding since she was able to sit astride a horse and learned to communicate with horses before people. At 11 years old, she began giving riding lessons to riders as well as being a trail guide for the academy. Her childhood days were spent with horses at the academy. 

As an adult, she became a private trainer at Broadway Morgan Farm, a breeding and training barn owned by Rich Majewski in Warwick. She taught the children in the family, Tammy and Tiffany, to ride both Saddle Seat and Wester
