Held November 20-21 at the Michiana Event Center in Shipshewana, Indiana, the Superior Morgan Sale brought Morgan enthusiasts together from all across the country. With 225 lots available for purchase, this year’s event had the single highest sale average in the 11-year history of the Superior Sale.
Committee members and founders of the sale, Al Lehman and Dennis Bontrager, thanked all the consignors for having their horses in top order and trusting Superior to provide a great venue to sell them. They also expressed their gratitude to all the buyers and bidders who came out to participate in a lively and exciting auction. Lyle and Dale Chupp of Chupp Auctions were the auctioneers, while David “Tuffy” Owens was a new addition for 2020 as the pedigree reader. They teamed up to produce results that included a Saturday average of $9,700 with 140 lots sold. The overall average on the weekend was $8,300.
The sale topper this year was 15-year-old broodmare, Crying Out Loud (HVK Bell Flaire x HVK Ancient Cry). She sold in foal to Burkland High Octane with a pre-paid breeding for 2021 to Dressed Up GCH. When the hammer fell, the bigscreen bid board read $75,000 for former owner Dennis Yoder and agent Joe Zehr. It was a final price of $60,000 for another Bell Flaire product, Acorn Ridge Vibrant (HVK Bell Flaire x Merriehill Great Day). Amos Yoder Jr. made a great presentation of this three-year-old stallion for breeder Mark Yoder. Another top horse from Iowa was Dutch Mor Masterpiece. Sired by Cool Whip and out of Harlan’s Dutch Maid, this 3-year-old gelding brought $47,500 for former owner Nelson Gingrich and agent Andy Helmuth.
Brand new for 2020 was an idea that has been percolating in Northern Indiana for several years now, and it made a splash in its debut. The Superior Morgan Sweepstakes is a limited breeders event, featuring a stallion service auction and a weanling sweepstakes class. The new feature was the combination of a stallion presentation with a stallion service auction, and the results were astounding. $225,000 was raised on Friday night, from the sale of 102 service fees. All that will be rolled into the 2022 Superior Morgan Weanling Sweepstakes class. The bids came fast and furious, as some of the greatest Morgan stallions in the country were presented to an overwhelmingly supportive and appreciative audience. More than 65 stallions made the trip to the MEC.
Dressed Up GCH topped the stallion auction at an incredible $18,500, followed by Dragonsmeade Spectre, who also was there in the flesh and received a big ovation when the hammer fell. Dragonsmeade also was represented in the Top Ten by Dragonsmeade Axios, with Merriehill After Hours up next on the list. Burkland High Octane brought a big price, as did sale closer Akira Derringer GCH. Dragonsmeade Eltanin made waves as just a young horse, while the great Graycliff Tony GCH also was well represented. SLB Da Vinci was one of the final additions to the lineup of stallions to be auctioned and turned out to be a great one, finishing ninth, with EKL Shakedown rounding out the Top Ten bids.
The Superior Sale team of Al and Lorraine Lehman and Dennis and Mary Bontrager were joined on the Sweepstakes committee by Glenn T. Werry and David “Tuffy” Owens.
The follow-up to this year’s event will be November 19-20, 2021, at the Michiana Event Center in Shipshewana, Indiana.
