The 80th Annual Rock Creek Horse Show, one of the nation’s top shows for American Saddlebreds, will feature a special “Family Night” on Thursday, June 8, with free admission for all, and unique opportunities to learn more about Kentucky’s native breed. The show runs for five consecutive evenings, June 6 through June 10, 2017, at the historic Rock Creek Riding Club adjacent to Seneca Park off Cannons Lane in Louisville, Kentucky.
Free goody bags with treats and information about the American Saddlebred will be distributed at the entry gate on Thursday night, and signage will direct interested visitors to a stall on the show grounds where they can meet, greet and pet an American Saddlebred horse in person. Special events for children will be featured, including the donation of free riding lessons by area stables, which will be raffled off during the evening.
The American Saddlebred horse was originally referred to as the "Kentucky Saddler" and is a true Kentucky Proud product, the result of careful selective breeding of the Thoroughbred, Morgan, and Naragansett Pacers and Trotters. The breed was developed during the Civil War where the Kentucky Saddler demonstrated his superiority. An early representative of the breed is the mare, Carolina, who is depicted in a statue located on Cherokee Road in Louisville, with her owner General John B. Castleman aboard. The characteristics that contribute to the Saddlebred’s reputation as the “peacock of the show ring” also make it a versatile horse, bold and brave, capable of performing almost any task he is asked to perform and doing it with extraordinary style.
The Rock Creek Show is one of the first major competitions in the 2017 Show Season and will feature horses and exhibitors from all over the United States, many of whom will return to Louisville in August to compete at the Kentucky State Fair which is the World’s Championship for the breed, similar to the Kentucky Derby and Breeder’s Cup events for the Thoroughbred.
