At a meeting of the Board of Directors of the American Saddlebred Horse Association held on Saturday, January 21, 2017, in conjunction with the UPHA's Annual Convention in New Orleans, the Board announced election of the following officers for 2017:
President: Donna Pettry-Smith (Illinois)
Vice President: David Rudder (Kentucky)
Secretary: Sandra Currier (Texas)
Treasurer: David Mount (Kentucky)
The Board also elected the following three individuals to serve on the ASHA's Executive Committee for 2017, together with the above four officers:
Kristen Cater (New Hampshire)
Elisabeth Goth (Kentucky)
Cheryl Innis (Connecticut)
All other ASHA Committees will be repopulated in 2017, and ad hoc Committees will be established, all of which will be announced in the near future. Committee members must be members in good standing of the ASHA; each Committee includes at least one ASHA Board member, to serve as a liaison to the ASHA Board. Committee news and minutes will appear on the ASHA website throughout the year.
Incoming ASHA President Donna Pettry-Smith stated, "It has been a pleasure to work with Bob on a couple of large projects this year. The ASHA's comprehensive list of USEF rule change proposals aimed at improving our breed's image was important to Bob, and I appreciated his vision to portray the American Saddlebred in a positive light. Additionally, Bob's leadership was instrumental in fighting the USDA's Amendments to the Horse Protection Act that had the potential to have a large negative effect on our breed. I cannot truly convey how grateful I am to him for sharing his wisdom and experience."
Said outgoing President Bob Funkhouser, "What an experience this has been. My six years on the board and two as president has been time well spent working with a staff and board members who have the best interest of the American Saddlebred at heart. There are things we didn't get done and there are things I'm very proud of. I feel great about the new leadership and look forward to helping where I can. My connection to the ASHA and its members will be a part of me forever."
